The art and science of reactive glazing at this years London Design Festival
Since moving to Stoke-on-Trent three years ago Reiko Kaneko has been exploring the endless possibilities presented by reactive glazing and its rebellious use on fine bone china – so prized for its pure whiteness.
The exhibition will feature a range of stark geometric fine bone china vases, designed to act as a canvas to show off the reactive glazes. The vases regimented shape alludes to the methodical process of testing, firing and re-firing undertaken to develop each of the unique finishes. Areas of pure white fine bone china left on all the designs preserve some of that prized whiteness and create sharp contrast to the vibrantly coloured glazes.
The small scale of the vases was part inspired by subtle beauty of the Elementary Stores existing collection curated by its owners Kotaro and Athena and they have been made to blend into the existing aesthetic of the shop space. The small vessels also allows them to be be used together in numerous formations to create larger sculptural pieces that can reflect an individuals taste and palette.
Inspiration also came from Kaneko’s Hula Jewellery Collection also which again uses a minimal aesthetic to emphasise the material qualities of fine bone china. The jewellery will be shown alongside the Studio Glaze vases in the exhibition and will feature new earring designs and a refined gilding technique. Studio Glaze Hulas will also be on show, exploring the potential of bringing the unique finish of reactive glazes to the collection.
